Manufacturer Provided Description
The Oyster 485 is a well-proportioned yacht that looks good from any angle and offers a combination of excellent performance, ease of handling, and real comfort. Like all Oysters the 485 features a deck saloon configuration creating a light, airy saloon and unbeatable ventilation. The 485 is well proven as a blue water cruiser, with numerous ocean crossings and at least one circumnavigation to her credit. The 485 has a low center of gravity, high performance bulb keel, and a fully-protected skeg-hung rudder. Performance was demonstrated in an Olympic triangle race during Antigua Race Week, when two 485s led the fleet and showed tremendous speed, particularly to windward. The standard sloop rig is set up with a conventional spar with a fully-battened mainsail and lazy jacks for ease of handling. The majority of these yachts have been fitted with in-mast furling, which enables all sail handling functions to be undertaken from the cockpit. For performance-orientated sailors whose cruising area is away from the boisterous trade winds of the Caribbean we also offer a sport rig with taller sailplan, which is ideal for cruising areas where light airs predominate. The Oyster 485 has a spacious owner's stateroom aft featuring a centerline berth which makes the cabin feel light and airy, particularly in warm climates. This stateroom also incorporates a large head within which is a separate stall shower. Forward there's the usual Oyster-type "walkthrough" galley, which is ideally located within easy reach of the cockpit and saloon. Both sides of the galley incorporate counter space and ventilation is assured with a number of adjacent opening ports. The saloon uses the yacht's maximum beam to good effect and incorporates a pair of oversized opening hullports for use while at anchor or dock, which allow good athwartships ventilation. In addition, really good fore and aft ventilation is offered by the deck saloon with its two opening forward windows. The saloon table incorporates a "clam" type design so it can be used in the small size, closed position, typically for drinks or informal gatherings. The table then opens, to provide a much larger surface for dining, by means of an ingenious pair of additional leaves that unfold from underneath when the table is opened from its "clam" position. The yacht's forward accommodation offers a choice of a standard arrangement with a twin, upper - lower berth cabin offset to port, and a twin or double vee berth cabin forward. There is also a head with an integral shower offset to starboard. As an alternative we also offer an optional variant with only one double cabin forward, to suit those owners looking for a yacht with just two cabins, but offering a very high standard of comfort, comparable to the owner's stateroom, for two guests. On deck right aft there is a large size lazarette locker and adjacent propane gas cylinder locker, so that all the usual cruising amenities have suitable stowage. At the end of the aft coachroof there is a pair of large bin lockers with enough space to house a life raft and other safety equipment on one side, with more than enough room for fenders, docklines, and other gear that needs to be kept to hand when sailing. The stern platform has a folding bathing - safety ladder and provides an ideal place to board the yacht from a dinghy. It also houses an optional flush mounted locker for a hot and cold freshwater deck shower.
